We often talk about the benefits of working at a startup. Recently on Urban Interns we noticed that a good portion of the jobs were at larger organizations including a venture capital firm, a government organization, and an electricity supply company.
So we thought it would be worth it to point out that it's not just startups that hire interns, and while we do believe in the many benefits of working at a smaller organization (hands on experience, working with founders, networking), more established companies can offer great experiences as well, including:
- A larger team environment. Simple math: big companies employ more people. If you like working on a larger team or with more teams, a bigger company might be for you.
- A more defined company culture. Bigger companies have generally spent more time figuring out their mission, their values, and what profile of employee fits best there.
- Structure. You're more likely to have followed in someone's footsteps at a bigger company. They have ways for doing things that people are used to, and this is appealing to many job seekers.
- HR processes. Not that startups don't offer reviews and the like, but bigger companies are more likely to have formalized programs for things like 360 reviews, mentorship, training, and of course, internships. Again, if you're not a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person, a bigger company might be a good fit.
