Crains on Growing Companies + Social Media Interns

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Urban Interns was recently featured in an article by Crains NY Business about the  increasingly popular trend of businesses hiring social media interns.

“When husband-and-wife team Robard Williams and Amanda Allen founded NewlyWish.com in 2009, they needed a savvy social-media strategy to promote the online gift registry. But given their background in banking and risk management, creating such a plan wasn’t their strong suit….NewlyWish’s part-time intern—who’d worked in marketing before enrolling at Fordham University Graduate School of Business—helped with tasks including devising a Facebook and Twitter strategy and creating an e-mail campaign.”
As Urban Interns reported to Crains, social media positions posted on the site have grown by 50 percent over the last six months.

Want a social media intern for your business? Here are some tips to get started:
  • Start offline: Have your intern draft everything for you to review before posting it on social networks.
  • Do the posting yourself: Once an editorial calendar is lined up, do the posting yourself. This way, you stay in control of exactly what’s being written where.
  • Ask around. If social media internships are on the rise, that means that you’re not the only one thinking about it. See what your colleagues’ experiences have been like, what’s worked and what hasn’t.
